Maafushi holds language courses to ease communications with Chinese tourists

To facilitate communication with the large number of Chinese tourists visiting Maafushi in Kaafu atoll, the Maafushi Council, in collaboration with Villa College’s Chinese Language Centre, has launched courses to teach Chinese to the council and other local institutions.

The first course was completed on Wednesday, 23 July, with a second course planned to begin soon.

The initial course was conducted for staff from the Maafushi Council, Maafushi Hospital, Maafushi Police, Maafushi School, and Maafushi Local Authority Company Limited. 

During the two-month course, 10 participants, two from each institution, learned Chinese.

After completing the basic Chinese course, participants received certificates, presented by Villa College’s Vice Rector, Dr Ali Najeeb.

Villa College stated that the council initiated these courses to enable tourism-related interactions and provide comprehensive services to Chinese visitors. This helps address issues faced by tourists, such as health services or minor incidents, ensuring better communication and support.

“The council took the initiative to conduct such courses as it is important to have someone who knows basic Chinese language in each institution,” Villa College told Sun.

Villa College noted that these efforts aim to prepare guesthouse staff to serve Chinese tourists and the second course will soon begin enrollment for interested participants.

China is the top source of tourists to the Maldives, with 174,658 Chinese visitors arriving this year so far.
