The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) announced on Sunday that it has begun issuing a notice to government-issued flats in Hulhumale’ with overdue rent.
Information obtained by Sun under the Right to Information (RTI) Act shows that out of 8,511 flats managed by the HDC, only 3,219 flats make regular rent payments, with overdue rent amounting to a staggering MVR 728 million.
While the HDC has the right to evict tenants with overdue rent, the corporation has said that it has not resorted to such action yet.
When asked by Sun regarding the steps being taken to recover the overdue rent, a spokesperson from HDC said that such tenants are being sent a notice every three months, reminding them to pay their rent.
The HDC said that there are some 5,099 flats that do not make regular rent payments.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had offered rent deferment on government-issued flats. And his successor, incumbent President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu discounted the rent on government-issued flats in Hulhumale’.
