President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has made the decision to designate August 30, the date on which the Sinamale’ Bridge opened nearly seven years ago, as the National Engineers’ Day.

The decision was announced by the President’s Office in a statement on Sunday.

According to the President’s Office, the decision to mark Engineers Day on August 30 is a nod to the biggest infrastructure development project in the Maldives’ history, the bridge linking the capital Male’ City with Hulhumale’ and Hulhule’, where the Velana International Airport is located.

This is the most appropriate day to celebrate Engineers’ Day, said the President’s Office.

According to the President’s Office, the Engineers’ Day celebrations will be organized by the Ministry of Construction, Housing an Infrastructure.

The 1.4-kilometer Sinamale’ Bridge opened on August 30, 2018, during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration.

The USD 200 million project was primarily funded by the Chinese government, with a combination of a USD 116 million grant and a USD 72 million loan, along with a USD 12 million contribution from the Maldivian government.

The project was overseen by President Muizzu, who was serving as Housing Minister at the time.
