Plastic makes up 922 of 200,000 tons of waste from Male’ area last year

National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) states 922 tons of plastic waste were collected from Male’ area alone in the past year.

NBS disclosed statistics obtained from Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) on the occasion of World Environment Day.

As per the statistics, 922 tons of plastic waste were collected from Male’ area in the past year with the highest number of plastic waste collected in July, August, September and November.

In this regard, 80 tons of plastic waste were collected in both July and August, 116 tons of plastic waste were collected in September and 135 tons of plastic waste were collected in November.

A total of 228,056.35 tons of waste were collected from Male’ area in the past year. Apart from plastic waste, they account for:

  • 131,713 tons of mixed waste
  • 44,684 tons of wet waste
  • 22,121 tons of sand/CnD
  • 11,592 tons of bulk waste
  • 10,385 tons of wood/sawdust/leaves
  • 861 tons of medical waste
  • 310 tons of metal
  • 273 tons of expired waste
  • 122 tons of other waste
  • 66.2 tons of sewage waste
  • 44.85 tons of glass
  • 11.3 tons of used oil

The amount of waste generated in Male’ area continues to increase with the uptick in the population.

The percentage of plastic waste also remains high amid campaigns against using single-use plastics, as they pose a huge threat to the Maldives’ delicate environment.
