Power goes out in greater Male’ area

State Electric Company (STELCO) headquarters in Male' City.

Power has gone out for a large part of the Maldivian capital, including Male’ City and Hulhumale’, as well as Hulhule’, where the national airport is located.

A spokesperson from State Electric Company (STELCO) confirmed there’s a total blackout in both Male’ City and Hulhumale’.

The spokesperson attributed the power outage to a “technical issue”, but did not elaborate.

“We are working to identify the issue and restore power,” said the spokesperson.

STELCO apologized to customers for the inconvenience.

Sun has been informed that the outage took place because the generators in Male’ City got overloaded due to an issue at the Hulhumale’ powerhouse.

However, this has not been confirmed by STELCO.

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which manages the Velana International Airport (VIA), said that the airport was not affected by the outage.

Meanwhile, schools in the capital let out students early due to the outage.

STELCO has said that power has been restored to critical infrastructure such as the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and the Dharumavantha Hospital.

However, it is unclear when power will be restored to other areas in the capital.
