High Commission rejects two people

The Indian High Commission has rejected two people who went there today to ‘seek protection’.

The two people rang the bell at the High Commission gate located near Traders Hotel at around 2:50 pm today. When the door was opened by a High Commission employee, the two people attempted to go in and were stopped by the High Commission employees.

The two people left the scene soon afterwards.

When approached by Sun and asked about the incident, one of them said that they went to the Indian High Commission to seek protection. He said that he did not wish to talk to the media, and they both refused to provide any details.

A senior official of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) told Sun Online on the condition of anonymity, that they went to the Indian High Commission to meet with the High Commissioner and ‘seek protection’. He said that both men have trials against them scheduled by the courts for next week. The official said that the Indian High Commission not only denied their request for protection, but treated them poorly as well.

“They are not members of PPM. They went to seek protection, because they have court cases against them. [We saw] clashes between citizens and High Commission personnel,” he said.

Meanwhile, former President Mohamed Nasheed has, since yesterday, sought protection and been ‘hiding’ inside the Indian High Commission.

The High Commission refused to comment on the matter.

Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) activist Mohamed Shareef (Eagles Shareef) also said in an interview with Haveeru that he was rejected by the Indian High Commission when he went there today to seek protection in order to avoid attending court.

Nasheed ‘hid’ in the Indian High Commission following a court order upon the police to arrest him, in order to produce him in court for the trial against him regarding the unconstitutional arrest of Chief Judge of Criminal Court, Abdullah Mohamed.
