The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has said tonight that the ongoing protests in Male’ are causing serious harm to children, the elderly and people with disabilities.
HRCM expressed concern over the damage caused to people’s homes, private buildings, and government property during demonstrations.
“As one person’s freedom is limited to anything that does not interfere with another person’s rights and freedom, we advise the public to act responsibly when exercising their right to freedom,” HRCM said via a document released by them.
HRCM further said that pictures and audio broadcasted by the media causes animosity, hatred and fear among people, and has a negative impact on the peace and harmony in the society.
“The results of these protests include a weakening of the country’s social framework, loss of respect and trust between people, and several obstructions in establishing a society where people are guaranteed their rights,” says the document.
The document released by HRCM further advises the public to resort to constructive discussions and peaceful means when dealing with conflicts and differences in opinions.
