Chief Justice condemns harassment of Supreme Court Judge

Chief Justice has strongly condemned the act of harassment imposed on Judge of Supreme Court Abdulla Saeed by a group of people on the street.

In a document released today, Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz Hussein said that the act is disrespectful to Judge Abdulla Saeed, and that he strongly condemns this act.

He further said that Judges hold the responsibility to ensure that justice and fairness are exercised in the society, and that such a demeaning act towards a Judge is a disappointment for all Maldivian citizens.

“Judges are there to serve the country. They hold the responsibility of establishing justice and fairness in the society. They are constantly on guard to protect individuals’ rights and freedom. As such, such an act against a judge is a disappointment for all Maldivian people,” the Chief Judge said in the document released today.

The Chief Judge advised the public to refrain from any act that may damage the respect, dignity and protection accorded to Judges by the Constitution and laws. He also called the relevant authorities to provide the necessary protection, as guaranteed by the Constitution, to Judges.
