Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik said last night that arresting people outside of the judicial system is not acceptable, and that the government should comply with the orders issued by the Supreme Court.
In response to a question posed by Sun Online, Dr Waheed said that even the Chief Judge of Criminal Court can only be arrested within the framework of the law.
Waheed said that the accepted system in the Maldives today is one in which the three powers are separate, and that the separate powers have to fully respect one another. He also said that there is room for improvement within all three powers, and the way to strengthen democracy in the country is to hold discussions on how these improvements can be made.
Dr Waheed spoke on this issue last night at a ceremony held by Clique College at Nasandura Palace Hotel as well.
He said that the Chief Justice is in charge of establishing justice and fairness in the society, and to harm the dignity of the Chief Justice is therefore, the same as destroying the foundation of justice existing in the country.
