Fenaka Corporation, on Wednesday, said a new 1.8-megawatt generator set will be sent to Addu City next week amid huge backlash over frequent power disruptions affecting the linked islands of the city.
Electricity in Addu City is provided by Fenaka.
The corporation announced that frequent power disruptions across the linked islands of the city were resolved after installing a 1.8-megawatt generator set on February 21st.
However, Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar confirmed to Sun last night that the city continues to face power disruptions.
Speaking with Sun regarding the matter on Wednesday, an official from Fenaka said the issue arises from negligence in planning over the past six years.
The official added that more efforts have been made in the past two months than ever before to address the power disruptions.
“In this regard, we are presently undertaking efforts to send a new 1.8-megawatt generator set to Addu within next week,” the official detailed.
Fenaka further noted steps are being made to improve the performance of the generator sets currently in use by enhancing the ventilation at the powerhouse. Since some materials need to be imported, the corporation said this process will take approximately one month.
Central Hithadhoo MP Ahmed Azan has requested to summon heads to Fenaka to Parliament’s Committee on State-Owned Enterprises over power disruptions in Addu City.
In a letter to the Parliament Speaker, Azan alleged that the power disruptions in Addu City had long gone unresolved due to negligence from Fenaka.
According to the latest census, Addu City’s population is at 25,062. While frequent power disruptions have prolonged at the city, Fenaka has attributed the issue to increased demand and damage to cables while carrying out projects such as road development.
