The price of coconut (Kurumba) at Dhathuruveinge Market has risen due to a shortage.
Adam Moosa, a fruit and vegetable vendor at the Market, said the supply of Kurumba has decreased due to an increase in prices.
In this regard, he detailed that a Kurumba is currently bought by business owners between MVR 35 and MVR 45. As such, Kurumba is presently priced at MVR 50 in Male’ market, while a 1.5-liter bottle of Kurumba water is priced between MVR 130 and MVR 140.
“There isn’t much (Kurumba) in the market. The issue arises due to excessive demands by residents who islands who have soared the prices,” he added.
Notably, the price of brown coconut (Kaashi) also rose recently, with most vendors selling a Kaashi for MVR 40. While some vendors priced a Kaashi between MVR 25 and MVR 30, a Kaashi sack is sold for MVR 1,600.
The prices of watermelon and passion fruit which is high in demand during Ramadan have been controlled. In this regard, one kilo of watermelon is priced between MVR 25 and MVR 30 while one kilo of passion fruit is sold for MVR 130.
The price of Kandoodhoo chili, which usually soars during previous years, remains controlled this year, with a kilo priced between MVR 230, MVR 250 and MVR 280.
The price of a kilo of carrots has risen to MVR 55.
A bunch of collard greens and curry leaves are sold for MVR 10.
