Today’s protest which started after Friday Prayers has come to a temporary end with the announcement that it will recommence at 8.30 tonight.
Confrontations took place between the Police, clad in riot gear, and citizens today as well. People called for the resignation of President Nasheed and the release of the Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed.
MNBC journalists were observed to be given protection by being permitted to remain inside the Police cordon area. The Police later claimed that they were not given protection, and that the Police were not aware that they were journalists when they were allowed inside the cordon area.
Today’s protest ended with the arrest of several people, who were taken onboard a boat to Dhoonidhoo. The people arrested include Mahloof and his father, President of Adhaalath Party Sheikh Imran, Maaz Saleem, and Madhanee Abdulla.
Protests have taken place for three consecutive nights in Male’, where people have voiced their frustration over the arrest of the Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed.
