Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed has resigned from her post of SAARC Secretary General.
In an interview with Sun before tendering her resignation, Dhiyana said that looking at how far things have gone, she does not believe that the best thing to do right now is to forcefully continue holding the post.
“Dhiyana has violated the SAARC Charter. She is not loyal to the person who appointed her. She is seen supporting opposition groups – when the Press Secretary makes such statements, it is not possible to work together in this atmosphere anymore,” Dhiyana said.
When asked by Sun if her resignation comes following pressure from the government, Dhiyana said that the government did not request for her resignation directly.
Dhiyana, who acted as Attorney General in the beginning of this regime, said that she commented on the country’s current issues not from a political angle, but from a constitutional angle. She also said that she was aware that the government may pressure her to resign as SAARC Secretary General, but she decided to raise her voice in the name of justice anyway.
“It had crossed my mind, that I may be pressured to resign. But I do not believe in holding a post where I have to keep my silence at a time like this,” Dhiyana said.
