President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said on Sunday that his administration’s goal is to ensure that energy supply in the Maldives is both sustainable and affordable.

In a message on the occasion of International Day of Clean Energy, President Muizzu said that as a low-lying island nation that is acutely vulnerable to climate change, investing in renewable energy sources is a vital commitment for the future of the Maldives.

President Muizzu said that Maldives has made great strides in advancing renewable energy, particularly through solar power initiatives.

He also noted that the Maldives has set an ambitious target of generating 33 percent of the country’s electricity through renewable sources by 2028.

President Muizzu said that his goal is to ensure that energy supply is sufficient, reliable, sustainable, secure, and affordable.

“The Energy Act and the roadmap for the energy sector outline the nation's plan to ensure that energy supply is sufficient, reliable, sustainable, secure, and affordable,” he said.

President Muizzu said that the Maldives’ private sector has demonstrated its commitment through investments in renewable energy, and encouraged them to continue with this dedication.

“These efforts not only contribute to global climate goals but also bolster our energy security and economic resilience,” he said.

President Muizzu also extended his gratitude to Maldives’ financing partners across the globe, for their support in transforming Maldives’ clean energy aspirations into reality.

He said that Small Island Developing States such as the Maldives need this support to be increased in the coming years.

Before concluding his message, President Muizzu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting Maldivian islands, fostering a healthier environment, and establishing the Maldives as an example for other nations to follow and strive towards clean energy for the greater benefit of the nation and planet.
