Male’ warehouse fire displaces 33 people in neighboring homes

The fire at a warehouse in Male’ City on Thursday early morning displaced 33 people living in 10 neighboring homes, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the fire at the warehouse of Fruit Tree Apple – a fruit and vegetable shop located in the busy Majeedhee Magu - was reported to the authorities at around 04:20 am.

Firefighters managed to control the blaze at around 05:20 am, and completely put it out a half hour later at around 06:00 am.

The NDMA said it identified 33 people in 10 neighboring homes who needed temporary housing due to damage to their homes from the fire. They were identified as 14 Maldivians and 19 migrants.

The authority said it has provided temporary housing to 22 people living in five of the homes; 14 Maldivians and eight migrants.

One migrant family arranged temporary housing on their own, while 11 migrants were provided assistance by their employers.

The fire did not result in any injuries.

However, the warehouse was damaged beyond use.
