Air quality in Male’ area drop to dangerous levels

The air quality monitoring system in Vilimale’ indicates that the air quality in majority of Male’ area has dropped to dangerous levels.

According to the air quality system at the Maldives National University (MNU)’s Centre for Maritime Studies campus in Vilimale’, the air quality in the Male’ area currently stands at 156 on the air quality index, posing potential health risks.

As such, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised the public to exercise precautionary measures.

In this regard, they have advised to wear masks if going outside and close doors and windows to minimize polluted air from entering homes. HPA has also advised individuals at risk, such as persons with lung disease, children, and pregnant women, to minimize time spent outside.

As per an air quality monitoring system in Sh. Funadhoo, the air quality index in that area is at 76, while the system in L. Gan reports the air quality index at 82.

Poor air quality has become extremely common in the Maldives recently and is often attributed to polluted air carried from India.
