Maldives sees dip in dengue fever; rise in respiratory infections

Statistics released by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) shows a significant decline in cases of dengue fever in the Maldives in October and November compared to the same period last year.

Statistics released by HPA on Sunday shows medical facilities registered 266 cases of dengue fever in October and November; 126 in October and 140 in November.

This marks a significant decline from the 524 cases of dengue fever reported during the same period last year.

Cases of Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE) have also seen a similar decline. As such, medical facilities registered 6,799 cases of AGE in October and November – down from 14,831 cases during the same period last year.

However, cases of Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) saw an increase. Medical facilities registered 70,019 cases of ARI in October and November – up from 65,634 during the same period last year.

HPA has advised people to take precautionary measures against viral diseases such as ARI, influenza and Covid-19.

  • Cover nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing and sneezing
  • Wash hands frequently
  • Get vaccinated against influenza
  • Avoid unnecessary hospital visits
