Labour Relations Authority (LRA) is looking into a group of 55 expatriates protesting near Muliaage claiming unpaid wages, said Immigration Controller Shamman Waheed on Saturday.
Videos shared on social media showed police had pushed the mob from Muliaage to Majeedhiya School.
Maldives Police Service confirmed to ‘Sun’ that the authority attended to the scene after receiving reports of expatriates protesting outside Muliaage. Police also confirmed all the protesters have been handed over to Immigration custody. The protesters include 38 Indians and 17 Bangladeshis.
Shamman confirmed that Immigration and relevant authorities have been looking into the matter, and assured taking necessary action against the migrant workers after the investigation.
“Since these migrants have claimed their rights were infringed, Labour Relations Authority officials are working closely at the Immigration Detention Centre to ascertain this,” Shamman commented.
He also assured expatriates will not be given any opportunity to disobey Maldivian laws and regulations under the permit issued from Immigration to them.
In a separate incident, a group of foreigners were reported of creating unrest at Artificial Beach on Friday.
