Strong winds rip roofs off Addu homes; 17 people moved to temporary shelters

Strong winds ripped off the roofs of five homes in Addu City on Friday night, with over a dozen people living in one of the homes, including children, moved to temporary shelters

Addu councilman Ahmed Nadhir told Sun on Saturday that torrential rain and strong winds caused damages to multiple districts of the city.

Roofs were ripped off one home in Maradhoo, one in Maradhoo-Feydhoo, two in Feydhoo and one in Hulhudhoo.

According to Nadhir, people living in one of the homes in Maradhoo-Feydhoo were moved as winds ripped off the roof of the entire building.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), 17 people living in the home were moved to residences of relatives. This includes four children under the age of 12 years.

“The roofs were ripped off a home in Maradhoo, Maradhoo Feydhoo, two in Feydhoo and one in Hulhudhoo. The entire roof got ripped off in the Maradhoo-Feydhoo home, including the home’s two bedrooms, living room and kitchen. The people living in the house had to be relocated. They were taken to a family home,” said Nadhir.

The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) said soldiers from its Southern Area Command provided assistance in the wake of the incident.

But the MNDF added that the incidents did not result in any injuries.

The incidents come as the national weather agency forecasts strong winds and rough seas to prevail over the Maldives.

The agency has urged seafarers to exercise caution, and for the public to take appropriate measures to mitigate the potential impact and damage from strong winds and rough seas.
