Police investigate after woman's Facebook ID hacked, used to dupe people out of money

Police have opened an investigation after the Facebook account of a woman was hacked and used to scam people out of money.

The case was reported to the police on Wednesday.

The police did not disclose any further details, but said they were investigating the case.

The Maldives has seen a rise in cybercrime, many involving hacked or impersonation social media accounts.

The police previously said they recovered MVR 2.2 million stolen in scams in the first eight months of this year.

Records show the police received reports of 1,661 scam cases last year, resulting in the loss of MVR 20 million.

More than 500 bank accounts were blocked this year in connection such cases.
