Th. Veymadhoo Council states a team from Ministry of Family and Social Development is scheduled to visit the island on Thursday in light of the attack on a staff and the unrest at the Family and Children’s Service Centre (FCSC) on the island.
A case involving a child under care at the facility causing disturbances and vandalizing items in the facility came to light recently which prompted concern from many.
Amid the issue, the Ministry transferred an additional five children to the facility which allegedly worsened the situation. It was further alleged that the child hit a case worker on the head with a glass bowl and continued vandalism of items in the facility.
Residents of the island gathered in front of the facility to protest over the incident prompting police officers to the scene.
Veymandoo Council member Faisal Yoonus told Sun that residents who launched the protest to express their discontent have halted the protests as of present.
He further said a team from Ministry of Family and Social Development will be arriving on the island on Thursday for discussions to resolve the issue. He stressed that a decision in the case can only be made following discussions with the Ministry’s team.
The child in question has allegedly previously caused disturbances at the facility. Faisal said the situation escalated with the transfer of five additional children to the facility.
