Man jailed pending trial’s end for stabbing at Male’ store

A man believed to have stabbed a person inside a shop in Male’ City last weekend has been jailed pending the outcome of his trial.

The incident in question took place at around 10:00 pm on Friday, October 4, inside a shop located on the Dhilbahaaru Magu. The police said that the victim, who was identified as a Maldivian man, was attacked with a sharp instrument. He was treated at the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and discharged the same night.

In a press statement on Tuesday, the police said they arrested the suspect in the case on Sunday, October 6. He was identified as Muneez, 37, Ma. Masfan, K. Male’.

He was presented before the Criminal Court for his remand hearing on Monday.

At the hearing, Muneez claimed that he was arrested in violation of proper procedure. However, the court, following a review of documents submitted by the police, decided that the claim had no merit.

The evidence submitted against him includes the victim’s statement, photos and a report documenting the victim’s injuries, and snapshots of CCTV footage of the incident.

The court decided that Muneez poses a danger to the community and ordered for him to be held at a custodial jail pending the outcome of his trial.

The case is under further investigation by the police.
