Man sentenced to one-year in prison for violation of home confinement

Criminal Court, on Wednesday, has sentenced a man who violated his three-year home confinement sentence to on year in prison.

The defendant is Ibrahim Shareef, M. White Fish, Male’.

He had been pressed with three charges;

  • Theft
  • Complicit in undue influence on another person’s property
  • Identity fraud

While the cases pertaining to all three charges were held separately, he was sentenced to three years, seven months and six days in home confinement as punishment following conviction.

As the sentence had not been served, Criminal Court has reviewed punishment and sentenced Shareef to one year and 10 months in prison.

As per the Court documents, Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO), citing a letter from the Maldives Correctional Service, said Shareef had not served his home confinement to any extent.

Shareef claimed that Corrections had not provided a deadline to share information of the individual who would assume the responsibility for his residence and phone number and that the information would be shared. It was noted that he had requested permission to travel to Th. Kinbidhoo for 10 days starting from November 30th.

However, he had not informed of his actions to Corrections following these 10 days.

Shareef said Corrections was not updated as he had not departed to the island.

Corrections claimed they had been unable to contact Shareef since then and was not receiving his cooperation.

The theft charge against Shareef stems from the theft a motorbike parked at a parking zone in Boduthakurufaanu Magu on the night on July 30, 2020, alongside an accomplice.

He was sentenced to one year, six months and 21 days in prison which was converted three years, one month and 12 days in home confinement. After review, the Criminal Court sentenced Shareef to one year, six months and 12 days.

The accomplice in undue influence on another person’s property charge stems from mugging a mobile phone off of a female pedestrian on Ameenee Magy on July 30, 2020, alongside an accomplice, and selling the phone.

He was sentenced to two months and 12 days in prison which was converted to four months and 24 days in home confinement. After review, the Criminal Court sentenced Shareef to two months and 12 days in prison.
