The police say are they are looking into reports that a schoolboy was stripped naked, beaten, videoed and then blackmailed for money by his peers in an island in southern Maldives.
The case came to light following a Facebook post by his mother on Tuesday night. According to the woman, the incident was perpetrated by a group of the victim’s peers, led by a ninth grader.
She said the group of boys broke into her son’s bedroom through a window as he slept, and threatened to kill him if he did not come outside willingly.
When he obliged, the group of boys led him to a forest area, where they “stripped him naked, beat him with a stick, videoed the incident, and blackmailed to leak the video if he does not pay money.”
She said that the group of boys then shared it on a group on Instagram with a number of his peers, and threatened to kill him.
“What could be a more serious crime than this?? But since this was perpetrated by a group led by a ‘child’ in the ninth grade then his right would come first again. How am I to get justice for my child” she wrote.
A police spokesperson said on Wednesday morning that they were alerted to the incident through social media.
“We are therefore collaborating with relevant authorities to clarify information regarding this incident,” said the spokesperson.
This latest case of extreme peer bullying comes after a young schoolboy was verbally and physically abused and humiliated in a restroom at a mosque in an island in central Maldives in April. The abuse was recorded on a mobile phone, and sent shockwaves across the country.
