President: Increasing greenery a cost-effective way to combat environmental impacts

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Monday, remarked that increasing greenery and planting trees are cost-effective and efficient solutions to combat environmental impacts. 

He made the remark via a post on social media platform X on the occasion of World Ozone Day (WOD).

The theme for this year’s WOD is “Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action” which underscores he critical role the Montreal Protocol plays in not only restoring the stratospheric ozone layer but also in mitigating climate change.  Montreal Protocol united the world to phase out ozone-depleting substances putting the ozone layer on the path to recovery and protecting all life on earth.

Notably, President Muizzu and First Lady Sajida Mohamed inaugurated the Five Million Trees Planting Program back in June on the occasion of World Environment Day. It is a significant presidential pledge to plant five million trees across the Maldives.

The President’s Office said launching the program shows the current administration’s commitment to protecting the nation’s fragile environmental ecosystems and combating climate change, thereby trying to minimize the present and future impacts for the benefit of future generations.

“This is by far the largest tree plantation project ever launched in the Maldives,” added the Office.
