CP: Police must use AI and other technologies to prevent crimes

The police must harness modern technological advancements such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) to develop the capacity to prevent crimes before they happen, says Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau.

He made the remark in a ceremony held on Sunday morning at the Iskandhar Koshi to mark the Police Service Day.

Addressing the gathering, Shujau spoke about the need for the police to adapt to the evolving nature of crimes, and must adopt “different” approaches to curtain drug trafficking and gang-related crimes – two longstanding issues facing the Maldives.

He said that the police must be “smarter” when investigating major crimes, such as terrorism and financial crimes.

Shujau also spoke about the need for greater focus on crime prevention.

“The police must use technology and Artificial Intelligence to develop the capacity to prevent crimes before they happen. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has provided assurance that the government will provide the police with these resources,” he said.

Shujau said he believes the public recognizes that the police have worked hard day and night to make Maldives a safe place.

He said that the people are witness to the fact that the police have paid with their “blood and life” to prevent criminals from taking over.

Shujau noted the many police officers who laid down their lives in the line of duty, such as Matyr Adam Haleem, Matyr Ali Nazim, and Matyr Misbah Abdulla, and the countless police officers who have sustained serious injuries.

During Sunday’s ceremony, the police recognized staff who have served the service for over 25 years.

The police force was previously run under the umbrella of the National Security Service – established on March 29, 1933. The Maldives Police Service was established as a sperate institution on September 1, 2004.
