Unhygienic food producing venues alarmingly high, will take action: Ihusan

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan said on Tuesday that the venues producing food in unhygienic conditions are alarmingly high, and promised to take action against them.

At the press conference at Iskandharu Koshi, Ihusan provided latest updates about the crackdown against illegal immigrants.

While highlighting on some of the most recent pressing issues, Ihusan said that authorities have discovered multiple venues operated by immigrants producing food in unhygienic conditions.

“Some of these venues, surprisingly produce a lot of food items for mass consumption, which include short-eats and other items,” Ihusan said.

Ihusan highlighted the recent ratification of the Food Protection Act which will be effective from Saturday onward, noting the law will enhance authorities to confirm if food producers adhere to specific standards.

The minister said authorities will be raiding venues suspected of producing food in hygienic conditions regularly, until the issue is completely resolved.

Authorities recently raided and stopped several parties producing food in highly unhygienic settings. The items produced and packed in these conditions include short-eats, arecanuts and other food items popular among Maldivians.

Following the recent crackdown, many locals have been raising concerns about the matter.
