The Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has signed an agreement with Norway's Flocean to commence a feasibility study for a subsea RO desalination system in the Maldives.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed and Flocean's MD Alexander Fuglesang.

MWSC said the study aims to collect technical data to assess possibility of establishing such a system in the Maldives, its potential environmental impact, and the financial projections of such a large-scale initiative.

MWSC's role as per the agreement is to provide relevant technical data and documents to Flocean to assist the latter's survey efforts, acquire necessary permits from government bodies, and overall assistance ensuring progress of the feasibility study.

MWSC said successful implementation of a subsea desalination system will enhance manufacture of clean drinkable water matching its demand. The company is also hopeful the survey will provide new data, which MWSC added, will help launch innovative projects.

The company further said that a subsea water manufacturing system also solves issues related to securing sufficient land for infrastructure and consumes less energy for manufacturing.

The survey is also poised to help Maldives achieve UN's sustainable development goals (SDGs) and other climate objectives.

This system will be instrumental for the Maldives to launch eco-conscious manufacturing of clean water at a national scale, which MWSC said, ensures social and economic benefits to all stakeholders.

MWSC assures commitment to spearheading environmentally sustainable practices in water manufacturing and sewerage services.
