The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has recovered over MVR 182 million owed to the Maldives government.

The ministry, earlier on July 24th, had publicized a list of local employers that owed more than MVR 100,000 to the state in expat quota and other related fees and fines.

Home Ministry said on X that the liable parties began making their outstanding payments after the list was publicized.

The authority said it has collected a total of MVR 182,954,572 in expat quota, fees and fines so far since the list’s publication.

During the Independence Day commemorative ceremony, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that the state was owed MVR 13 billion and promised his administration will recover this total from the liable parties.

He said the former government failed to recover billions of dollars owed to the state, which President Muizzu said was legally owed to the state. He further said that the state was owed MVR 513 million in outstanding land lease payments when the current administration took charge.

Following President Muizzu’s announcement, government bodies have begun taking extra steps to recover these money.
