Wednesday made a public holiday over torrential rain: Govt

The government on Tuesday announced Wednesday will be a public holiday owing to the bad weather conditions and heavy rainfall.

Government Spokesperson, Heena Waleed said on X that the decision comes directly from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

She added President Muizzu made the decision due to the heavy rainfall Maldives is experiencing right now, and added this will provide respite to students, employees and travelers.

Heena further affirmed the government is committed in helping the public for potential property damages and other plights amid the worsening weather conditions.

The Maldives Meteorological Center (MET Office) has downgraded the orange alert issued earlier on 14:15hrs of Tuesday afternoon to a yellow alert.

 

Several islands have experienced floods causing damages while over 230 Male’ City residences reported of floods, said National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
