Bar Council to host discussion sessions

Bar Council of the Maldives, in collaboration with Villa College and the Maldives National University (MNU) will be hosting a discussion session titled "Constitutional Promises and Reality: A 16-Year Review."

In a joint press release, Bar Council and collaborators said the session will be held on August 6, 2024 from 08:15hrs to 22:30hrs at MNU's Faculty of Education.

The council said that the discussion will primarily focus on the progression of the Maldives Constitution of 2008 over the years.

Key areas of focus in the session will be on the promises of the Constitution, the efforts and challenges to make them a reality.

Besides this, particular attention will be paid to the funamentals of rights and freedoms, an independent judiciary and the system of governance and the lessons learned in these areas.

The keynote speaker of the forum is Dr. Shamsul Falaah, whose areas of research expertise are in Maldivian Constitutional Law and Islamic Constitutionalism.

Dr. Falaah is also a former member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), and a former legal advisor at the President's Office as well.

Currently, Dr. Falaah is working with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), New Zealand.
