Mohamed Azmee and Mohamed Shafeeu has been elected to Bar Council of Maldives (BCM)’s Executive Committee during an election held online.
BCM’s Executive Committee comprises of a president, a vice president and seven other members.
The election was held as the term of the Committee’s vice president and four incumbent members are set to expire. They are:
The remaining members in BCM’s Executive Committee are its President Hussain Siraj and three members: Aminath Sheena Mohamed, Ahmed Shifau and Abdul Salaam Arif.
An online election was conducted on Monday to select two individuals from among the applicants who applied for the membership positions, following the announcement made on April 28th.
According to BCM, a total of 1,078 lawyers registered to vote in the election.
Azmee and Shafeeu were elected for the post in a majority vote. In this regard, they received the following votes:
Azmee
In favor: 132 votes
Against: 96 votes
Total votes: 228
Number of people who did not vote: 850
Shafeeu
In favor: 270 votes
Against: 39 votes
Total votes: 309
Number of people who did not vote: 769
According to BCM, it will open applications for the Executive Committee’s vice presidency and the remaining three posts today, with a deadline set for 15:00pm on Sunday, June 15th.
