Man who stole British Honorary Consul's motorbike gets 10 months in prison

Criminal Court has sentenced the man who stole a motorbike belonging to the British Honorary Consul to the Maldives to 10 months in prison.

As per Tuesday’s ruling, Ahmed Irushan, a native of R. Kandholhudhoo, stole the motorbike belonging to British Honorary Consul to the Maldives Dr. Paul Arthur Van Driessche at approximately 10:30am on November 14, 2023, while it was at Boduthakurufaanu Magu.

Irushan was pressed two with two charges in connection to the theft; one for stealing the motorbike and one for stealing a glasses under the seat of the motorbike.

He pled guilty to both charges following which he entered into a plea agreement with the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG Office). Henceforth, the case was fast-tracked by the court.

The plea agreement set forth nine months and 18 days for stealing the motorbike and one month and six days for stealing the glasses as penalty for the crime.

Criminal Court sentences him accordingly. However, Irushan had spent 15 days and 19 hours in custody during the investigative stage. After deducting these hours, Irushan will have to serve nine months and two days.

Theft was the highest reported crime last year and remains the highest reported crime so far this year. In this regard, a total of 3,819 cases of theft were reported last year while 1,899 cases of theft have been reported so far this year.
