Dead body found washed ashore in Fuvammulah

The Maldives Police Services has reported that a dead body has been found in the southern atoll of Fuvammulah, and that the body might be that of Mohammed Nafiz, 30, who had gone missing days before.

A police media official told Sun Online today that the body was found by a search team of police about 500 feet away from the spot where Nafiz had reportedly jumped off a land-bound boat in order to swim to the shore. The body was found at the shore of A’nbul, an area to the east of the island.

The police also said that the body was found this morning.

A source from Fuvammulah says that Nafiz’s family members assured that the body was his, identifying it from a rubber ring on its feet.

Nafiz went missing after he reportedly jumped off a boat where there were two others. They were approaching the island on their way back from fishing in the outer waters of the island. Nafiz, as claimed by the other two boatmen, jumped saying that he would swim ashore. He has been missing since he jumped, and the police, aided by local population, have been looking for him since.

Mohammed Ibrahim, President of Hoadhadu Ward Council, said that Nafiz jumped with a container of oil, and that his mobile phone had also been found near the spot where he jumped.

Mohammed Ibrahim also said that the three may have come back with narcotics from Addu City, despite the claim that they had been to fishing.

The two men accompanying Nafiz are now under police custody for investigation of the matter.
