President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has extended condolences to the family of local football star Mohamed Arif (Baka) following his passing on Tuesday.
Baka, 38, who traveled to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj pilgrimage at the invitation of Saudi Arabian King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, had only recently returned to the Maldives.
While he had been unwell at the time of his return, Baka passed away while being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of ADK Hospital after his health declined further.
Via a post on X, President Muizzu described the demise of Baka, who had brought a good name to the Maldives, as a moment of significant sorrow to the nation.
He expressed his participation in mourning Baka’s death, wished his family patience, and prayed to almighty Allah to grant the departed’s soul with Jannat.
Reliable sources told Sun that Baka was taken to ADK Hospital after facing difficulties in breathing, which is believed to have been a result of a respiratory infection.
Condolences have flowed to Baka’s family following his passing from not only the President, but other government officials, fellow athletes, sports sector stakeholders and members of the general public.
His funeral prayer will be held after Fajr prayer at Islamic Centre.
