PNC, MDP only contend for City Council vacant seats

Ruling People's National Congress (PNC) and main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have contested for three vacant seats of Male' City Council.

They are the only political parties vying for the positions.

Elections Commission (EC) announced the by-election for the vacant seats of Central-Machchangolhi, West-Henveiru, and Hulhumale' is scheduled for July 20th.

Candidates for vacant seats are;

Central-Machchangolhi

  • Fathimath Ishan Ali, PNC
  • Hawwa Shifana, MDP

West-Henveiru

  • Fathimath Shaufa Saleem, PNC
  • Mohamed Ali Jinah, MDP

Hulhumale'

  • Ali Aiman, PNC
  • Ahmed Rasheed, MDP

After Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the former mayor won his presidential election, the capital city's mayoral position became vacant.

MDP candidate, and former MTCC Managing Director Adam Azim secured the mayoral position in the by-election that followed.

Besides Male' City, by-elections will be held across six other islands for the vacant seats in their councils and Women's Development Committees (WDCs).
