Ulhiashi Boat, a vessel that travels between the Maldivian capital and several islands in Shaviyani Atoll has sunk while carrying cargo.

The vessel, following a trip to Male’ City, had been en route to Shaviyani Atoll islands on Tuesday morning to offload goods when it sunk.

A crew member told Sun that the boat took in damage after colliding with the breakwater of the channel while entering Bilehfahi harbor.

Subsequently, the vessel began taking in water and by the time it had docked at Bilehfahi harbor, a part of it had already sunk.

“At the moment, we do not have anything further to say. However, we are working on minimizing the losses as much as possible,” the crew member said.

At the time of the sinking, the vessel was carrying a large number of goods including gas, stocks for shops and items belonging to private individuals.

The vessel which travels between Male’ and Kanditheemu in addition to Komandoo, Feydhoo, Goidhoo, Bilehfahi and Kanditheemu has been in operation for 17 years.
