Siyam to chair Speaker election sitting

Meedhoo MP-elect Ahmed Siyam Mohamed will chair the sitting scheduled for Tuesday, to elect the Speaker of the Parliament following member oath taking for the 20th parliamentary assembly.

Following the oath taking of the elected parliamentarians on Tuesday, the parliament's Speaker and Vice Speaker will be elected in the following sitting, scheduled for 10:15hrs on Tuesday morning.

The members are scheduled to take oath at 09:00hrs on the same morning.

While Siyam has been appointed to chair the sitting to elect the Speaker and Vice Speaker, this marks his fifth term at the legislative body.

Similarly, he had chaired the sitting to elect the Speaker at the 19th parliamentary assembly as well.

A total of 93 members will be representing constituencies in the 20th assembly, out of which more than 70 members belong to the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).

The party earlier announced its decision to field Fonadhoo MP-elect Abdulraheem Abdulla for parliament Speaker's position, and Dhangethi MP-elect Ahmed Nazim for Vice Speaker's role.
