Local Governance Minister Adam Shareef Umar’s wife, Zeenaz Adnan, has been appointed ruling People’s National Congress (PNC)’s secretary general.

The appointment was announced by PNC’s spokesperson Heena Waleed via a post on X on Friday night.

Zeenaz has previously served as a member of PNC’s coalition partner, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s senate. She had announced her intention to contest in this year’s parliamentary election.

Prior to this, she has served as the chief executive officer of the children’s shelter in Vilimale’ and the education sector in various posts over a long period of time.

The current ruling party, PNC, was elected to the government through a coalition that included PPM. However, party members have exceeded 50,000 following their election. The coalition’s candidates for April’s parliamentary election also contested on PNC’s ticket.

Although PPM has become sidelined, the coalition’s leadership is undertaking efforts to strengthen PNC. In this trajectory, members have been appointed to senior posts in the party.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu serves as the party’s leader while Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef serves as the deputy leader. Meanwhile, former leader of the party, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, currently serves as a chairperson.

Members were recently appointed to the party’s parliamentary group which will be headed by MP-elect Ibrahim Falah as the leader.
