A yellow alert for strong winds and rough seas has been extended for a large part of Maldives, as the country faces intense monsoon rains.

The yellow alert is in effect for the area from Sh. Atoll in the north, all the way down to Addu City in the south.

Maldives Meteorological Service forecasts the area will be affected by strong winds of 25-30 miles per hour, and gusts of 50 miles per hour.

Seas are expected to be very rough, with waves of 6 to 9 feet.

The weather agency also forecasts scattered showers with few heavy showers and thunderstorms across the country.

Meteorological Service has been issuing daily yellow alerts over the last couple of days, with an orange alert issued on Saturday for Addu and Fuvahmulah, as the southern cities were lashed with gusts of 60 miles per hour.

There are reports of flood damage and of roofs getting ripped off homes, across the Maldives.

The bad weather has prompted authorities to advise all, especially seafarers, to exercise caution during this period.
