Maldives Police Service has launched a probe into a pregnant woman being assaulted by her family.

The case was brought to light in social media. In a post shared on Facebook the victim, she said she is being assaulted by her father, younger sibling who is a minor and additional family members who have struck her in the head and her stomach.

She posted pictures of her injuries in the post.

The Facebook post was shared on X by an individual who tagged the Police in the post, appealing for justice for the woman.

Commenting on the matter, Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan said the case is under investigation in collaboration with the relevant authorities. He did not disclose any further details.

Although domestic violence is fairly common in the Maldives, it mostly goes unreported to authorities. 219 cases of domestic violence were reported to the Police in 2023, while 91 cases have been reported so far this year.
