38-year-old man arrested for assaulting mother

A 38-year-old Maldivian man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting his mother.

He stands accused of assault and domestic violence.

He was presented before Criminal Court for a remand hearing on Saturday, during which the court ruled that sufficient evidence was submitted against him. In this regard, the court said the statements submitted by the Police against him, indicated that he assaulted his mother.

Henceforth, the court remanded him in custody for 15 days.

The court remanded him in custody citing the possibility of him being a threat to the society. The court also cited the possibility of the man assaulting his mother again and threatening her to influence evidence in the case. 

The man’s 15-day remand will expire on August 25th.

Sun has been unsuccessful in its efforts to obtain a comment from Maldives Police Service regarding the case. Therewith, the details of the incident remain unknown.

Notably, Criminal Court sentenced a man to two months and 12 days in prison after he was found guilty of repeatedly beating his mother back in June.
