Parliament approves Zareer as Tax Commissioner

The Maldives Parliament on Monday, has approved Hassan Zareer as the new Commissioner General of Taxation.

Zareer, the former Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation was appointed at the final sitting of the 19th parliament assembly with the approval of 45 votes, with no votes against.

The position became vacant after the last CG of Taxation Fathuhulla Jameel resigned earlier in February 01st to contend in the parliamentary election.

After the application duration for the vacant position, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu submitted the names to parliament, in order of eligibility, on March 13th, 2024.

President Muizzu nominated former Tax Commissioner Yazeed Mohamed, and Zareer, who was Yazeed's deputy.

At last Tuesday's Parliament Economic Committee meeting, Yazeed received four votes in favor while his former deputy received 10 votes in favor.

Zareer is also the current Chairman of the Bank of Maldives' Board of Directors, to which he was appointed earlier on March 25th.
