President Muizzu assures financial support for media outlets

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the government’s initiative to provide a dedicated incentive to the press media from the state budget.

He made the announcement in his address commemorating World Press Freedom Day.

In his address, the President underscored the difficulty in obtaining sustainable income as the biggest hurdle in the Maldivian journalism sector.

Henceforth, he announced his administration’s initiative to provide a dedicated incentive to the press media from the state budget, which he cited would be realized with the parliament supportive of the government’s policies.

He affirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing journalists' needs and aspirations and realizing them.

Recalling his pledge to develop a media village where media outlets can lease office space at reasonable prices, the President reiterated his intention to fulfill the pledge, He also expressed his commitment to increase education and training opportunities for journalists, expand the sector and increase cooperate between local media outlets and international media outlets.

Speaking further, President Muizzu underscored the vital role played by journalists in the progress and prosperity of a nation. In this regard, he detailed their responsibility to report daily events, raise awareness in the society, bridge the gap between the government and citizens, and voice the people's concerns to the authorities. 

The President also encouraged the dissemination of accurate information, urging the public to remain cautious, carefully and thoroughly consider all news, and to always seek out the truth.

He further urged journalists to uphold their national responsibilities with integrity.

Concluding his address, he called upon the government, journalists, service providers, and all citizens to unite and work together towards the common goal of advancing the nation, improving conditions, and achieving the aspirations of the people.
