President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Friday, has affirmed his administration’s commitment to equipping youth to navigate the challenges of an ageing society.

He made the remark via a post on X on the occasion of World Population Day.

In this regard, the President, referring to projections indicating one-fifth of the Maldivian population will be over 65 by 2062, said his administration remains committed to shape a future where the youth are equipped to embrace both the opportunities and challenges presented by an aging society.

In this trajectory, he stated that the government will continue to invest in expanding access to reproductive healthcare, improving the quality of education, providing adequate housing, and protecting the overall social and economic well-being of every Maldivian.

World Population Day is observed annually on July 11 to raise awareness of population-related issues and the importance of sustainable development.

Research shows that Maldives’ birthrate has dropped to concerning levels.

A study by Maldives National University and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) found that financial difficulties and housing shortages are the two main factors contributing to the country's low birthrate. One possible solution according to the study is for the government to offer financial support to families with multiple children.

The study cites key challenges to childbearing as a rise in the number of women who are overweight, have Vitamin D deficiencies, or are affected by polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
