Main opposition MDP has endorsed Mohamed Sharafuddheen, the candidate contesting for North Fuvahmulah constituency in the parliamentary election that is backed by former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.
MDP announced its decision to endorse Sharfudheen via a statement on Wednesday.
They appealed to constituents of North Fuvahmulah constituency who support MDP to endorse and vote and Sharafuddheen.
Sharafuddheen is contesting the parliamentary election as an independent candidate. However, he has been endorsed by former president Yameen. He has spoken at a ceremony held by the People’s National Front (PNF), the new political party formed by Yameen, to introduce candidates backed by the former president.
Two candidates are contesting for North Fuvahmulah constituency in the parliamentary election slated for Sunday. They are Sharafuddheen and ruling People’s National Congress (PNC)’s candidate Hamdhu Abdulla.
Prior to this, MDP has also endorsed Ali Zahir, who is contesting as an independent candidate for V. Felidhoo constituency.
MDP is the party with the largest number of candidates contesting this election, followed by PNC.
Polling stations will be open from 8:00am to 5:30pm on Sunday; a decision made by the Elections Commission earlier today, which is undertaking final preparations for the election.
