Govt signs with Chinese firm to produce energy from waste

China Tianying Inc. (CNTY) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Maldives government to assist in the advancement of renewable energy initiatives.

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy on Thursday, said that under the agreement, the Chinese company will assist in the development of a renewable energy source produced from waste materials.

Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Enery Thoriq Ibrahim signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldives government while the President CNTY, De Biao Cao signed on behalf of the company.

Under the two-year contract, CNTY will assist in the socioeconomic developmental initiatives of the Maldives by providing its industrial and technological expertise.

The agreement consists of CNTY helping capacity development of all relevant bodies mandated with environmental and sustainable development responsibilities, by splitting the Waste-to-Energy project into two phases.

CNTY will engage in environmental preservation, utility service improvement and combatting climate change impact, which Minister Thoriq said is an instrumental initiative in the Maldives' commitment towards national development and environmental protection.

Thoriq said CNTY was already engaged in similar projects across the Maldives.

The company's President emphasized the agreement would further solidify the bilateral cooperation between the Maldives and China.

The ministry said it has decided to execute human resource development, workshops, seminars and internship opportunities under the agreement as well.
