President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu says that the former administration delayed developmental projects in islands, resulting in the Kuwait Fund withdrawing the aid it pledged to run the projects.

He made the remark in a gathering in HDh. Hanimaadhoo on Monday – as part of his ongoing tour of northern Maldives.

Addressing the gathering, President Muizzu said that the former MDP administration contracted projects to build 30-bed hospitals in Hanimadhoo, and three other islands.

He said that the Kuwait Fund had pledged grant assistance to support the projects, but later withdrew funding due to delays in implementation of the projects.

“The Kuwait Fund pledges grant assistance. The former administration failed to utilize the fund and delayed and delayed the implementation of the project, until it eventually withdrew funding,” he said.

President Muizzu said that all financial institutions have specific policies they follow in releasing funding.

He said that Maldives lost funding for the hospital projects due to the ‘carelessness’ of the former administration.

“When they withdrew funding, the other three islands lost funding as well,” he said.

President Muizzu said that it was “just an example of the extent of a government’s mismanagement.” He said that his administration was working on reviving such projects.
