President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Tuesday, has nominated Elections Commission (EC)’s incumbent Secretary General for EC membership, to replace EC’s current Vice President Ismail Habeeb, whose membership term is set to expire soon.
Habeeb’s term will expire on March 13th.
President Muizzu forwarded the name of Hassan Zakariyya, EC’s Secretary General, from the individuals that submitted applications for the post to the parliament on Tuesday.
Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem, who was presiding over Tuesday’s parliamentary sitting, forwarded Zakariyya’s nomination to the Committee for Independent Institutions for review.
This marks Habeeb’s second term as a member of the election body. The law prohibits him from undertaking an additional term.
The term of EC’s President Fuad Thaufeeg, who is also serving a second term, is set to expire in November of this year.
