Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem was attacked on Wednesday by two people on a motorbike who used a weapon, says the Prosecutor General’s Office.
In a statement condemning the attack, the PGO said the incident took place at dawn on a street in Male’ City.
The PGO identified the suspects as two people on a motorbike, adding that they had used a weapon in the assault.
While neither the PGO nor the police have specified the type of weapon used, a police spokesperson had said earlier that they had ruled out the use of a sharp-edged weapon.
Shameem is being treated for his injuries at the ADK Hospital.
The PGO said that Shameem remains in hospital, but that is condition is stable.
It did not disclose details regarding the extent of his injuries.
The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has strengthened his security in the wake of the attack.
The PGO said that the Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau visited Shameem at the hospital.
The police said they were investigating the case. But they have yet to make an arrest.
